The hardware
How many mesh routers will you need?
Apartments and most single-storey homes are fine with one. Houses, double-storey places and anywhere the Wi-Fi already gives up at the back usually want two. They work together as one network, so there is one name and one password wherever you stand.

$280 for the first, $260 for the second, $240 for the third. Each one costs $20 less than the one before, and that is the same whether you buy them together or add one later.

The router is a one-off cost. The $11.99 a month is the protection, the management and the support.
When one mesh router is not enough
One mesh router covers a single floor with ordinary internal walls comfortably. You are likely to want a second if any of these are true.
- Two storeys, with the router on one floor and bedrooms on another.
- Double brick, rendered walls, or foil-backed insulation. These block Wi-Fi far more than plasterboard.
- A long or narrow floorplan, where the far end is a long way from the middle.
- The connection arrives at one end, in a garage or a front cupboard, so the router cannot sit centrally.
- A studio, granny flat or garage office you also want covered.
- You already know where the Wi-Fi dies. If there is a room the family avoids because of it, that is a second unit.
Still not sure? Start with one. A second later costs the same as buying two together, so waiting does not cost you anything. And protection only reaches what is connected, so if part of the house is out of range today it is worth fixing either way.
Optional, and clearly optional
The lock covers the house. This covers what leaves it.
Your plan protects everything while it is on your home network. A laptop at a cafe, a phone on mobile data, a school tablet on somebody else's Wi-Fi: those are all outside the door.

Before you switch on the VPN
Both plans include a VPN. It sends that device's traffic out through a tunnel, around your home network, and while it is on, your Tutela protection and your parental controls do not apply to that device.
Leave it off unless you have a specific reason, such as public Wi-Fi at an airport, and we would not put it on a child's device at all. Choose Premium for its scam protection and tracker blocking, not for the VPN.

Parental controls apply to devices while they are using your home network. A device using mobile data, or a connection routed elsewhere, is outside it.
Device and application priority applies to traffic inside your home network. It does not change the speed or the congestion of your provider's connection.
Mobile failover uses a paired phone's data connection. Speed and data use depend on that phone's plan.
The plan is month to month. If you cancel, the router keeps working as a router, because you bought it outright. The protection, the parental controls and the reporting are what the monthly fee pays for, so those stop. If a router is faulty we replace it, which is your right under Australian Consumer Law.
Figures shown in the sample monthly report are examples only. "No known exposure found" is a statement about known breach data at the time of the check, not a clean bill of health.
Prices include GST and are indicative pre-launch pricing. Tutela Home Protection is required for the Bitdefender add-ons. Bitdefender product features are Bitdefender's own and are supplied under Bitdefender's terms.
